Shield
The use of the shield of the coat of arms approved for the 49th Engineer Regiment, difference by a border, indicates the descent of the Battalion from the 2d Battalion of that organization. Scarlet and white are the colors used for the Corps of Engineers. The representation of Pikes Peak alludes to Camp Carson, Colorado, where the 49th Engineer Regiment was activated.
Crest
The fleur-de-lis refers to France; the lion is the Provincial Arms of Normandy and, together with the partisan or spearhead, represent the units participation in the invasion of France, World War II. The blue color of the fleur-de-lis refers to the award of the Presidential Unit Citation and the fleur-de-lis itself indicates the award of the French Croix de Guerre with silver star. The mural crown represents attacks against fortified towns during the units participation in the Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe Campaigns.
The coat of arms was approved on 12 September 1955. It was amended to add a crest on 11 July 1975.
